When the Next Generation Walks Away:- (The Decline of Agricultural Employment)
One evening in a village, a father was sitting outside his house, holding some soil in his hand. His son was packing his bag to leave for the city. The father said, “This land has given us everything.” The son stopped for a moment and replied, “I know, but I want something more.”
This small moment shows a big change happening in many parts of India today. Agriculture, which was once the main source of livelihood, is slowly losing its importance as a source of employment. More and more people, especially young people, are moving away from farming and looking for other opportunities.
A Change We Can See in Daily Life:-
If we look around carefully, we can see this change without reading any report. Villages are not as active as they used to be. During farming seasons, fewer people are seen working in the fields.
Many families now have at least one member working in a city. Some people return only during festivals or important family events. Farming is no longer the only option for earning a living.
Recent estimates show that around 45% of the workforce is still engaged in agriculture, but this number has been decreasing over time. At the same time, agriculture contributes only about 15–17% to the total income of the country.
This clearly shows that agriculture is supporting many people, but it is not giving enough income in return.

Why Are People Leaving Agriculture????
1. Farming Is Uncertain:-
Farming depends on nature. Rainfall, temperature, and natural disasters can affect crops. Even after hard work, farmers are not sure how much they will earn.
For example, if the rain is too less or too much, crops can fail. This makes farming risky, especially for young people who want a secure future.
2. Small Landholdings:-
Over time, land gets divided among family members. As a result, farms become smaller.
A small piece of land cannot produce enough income for a whole family. Because of this, many people decide to leave farming and look for other jobs.
3. Use of Machines:-
Modern machines like tractors and harvesters have made farming easier and faster. But they also reduce the need for human labor.
Earlier, many workers were needed for one task. Now, one machine can do the same work in a short time.
4. Changing Dreams of Youth:-
Today’s youth have access to education, mobile phones, and the internet. They see different lifestyles and opportunities.
They want jobs that offer growth, comfort, and respect. Farming is often seen as hard work with low income.
5. Need for Regular Income:-
In farming, income comes only after the crop is sold. This may happen once or twice a year.
In contrast, jobs in cities provide monthly salaries. Even if the salary is small, it is regular. This gives a sense of security.
(Examples from Real Life)
In many villages, we can see such changes clearly.
For example, Ravi, a farmer’s son, decided to work as a delivery agent in a nearby town. He earns a fixed amount every month. His parents still farm, but Ravi helps them financially instead of working in the fields.
Another example is Suman, who started a small tailoring business in her village. She does not depend on farming anymore, but her work supports her family.
These examples show that people are not only leaving agriculture-they are finding new ways to earn.
(Effects of Decline in Agricultural Employment)
1. Farming Is Left to Older People:-
In many villages, young people are moving out. Farming is mostly done by older members of the family.
This can slow down the use of new methods and technology in agriculture.
2. Women Are Taking More Responsibility:-
Women are playing a bigger role in farming today. They manage fields, take care of animals, and handle many tasks.
However, their work is often not properly recognized or supported.
3. Increase in Migration:-
More people are moving from villages to cities. This creates pressure on cities in terms of jobs, housing, and services.
At the same time, villages lose their active workforce.
4. Rise of Informal Jobs:-
Many people who move to cities do not get high-paying jobs. They work in small or temporary jobs with low income and no job security.
5. Change in Rural Culture:-
Agriculture is closely linked to traditions and festivals. As fewer people farm, these traditions slowly lose importance.
Village life also becomes less active and connected.
Is This Change Positive or Negative?????
This change has both positive and negative sides.
On the positive side, it shows that people are exploring new opportunities. It is a sign that the economy is changing and developing.
In many developed countries, only a small number of people work in agriculture, but production is high because of technology.
On the negative side, if people leave farming due to problems and do not find better jobs, it creates new challenges.
So, the real issue is not the decline itself, but how this change is happening.
What Can Be Done to Improve the Situation????
1. Improve Farmers’ Income:-
If farmers earn more, fewer people will leave agriculture. Better prices and support systems can help.
2. Create Jobs in Rural Areas:-
Small industries, food processing units, and local businesses can provide jobs near villages.
This will reduce the need to migrate to cities.
3. Provide Skill Development:-
People should be trained in different skills so they can earn in multiple ways.
This will reduce their dependence on agriculture alone.
4. Use Technology in a Balanced Way:-
Technology should help farmers increase productivity, but it should not remove all job opportunities.
5. Improve Basic Facilities:-
Better roads, schools, hospitals, and internet services can improve life in villages.
People will not feel the need to leave if basic needs are met.
A Simple but Important Thought:-
Development does not mean leaving agriculture behind. It means improving it and making it more useful and profitable.
Agriculture is still very important because it provides food for everyone. Without it, no country can survive.
Conclusion:-
The decline in agricultural employment is a real and important change. It shows that people are looking for better opportunities and a more secure life.
Young people are not wrong in wanting something different. But agriculture should also not be ignored.
We need a balance where:-
Farming becomes more profitable
People get better job opportunities
Villages continue to grow along with cities
Because in the end, one simple truth always remains-
no matter how modern our lives become, we still depend on the farmers who grow our food.
